Poker card value by suit II
September 24th, 2008Although a kind of hierarchy of the suits of cards has been established I poker games, it is always to be remembered that when determining value of the hand, the rank is always the first parameter of comparison and only in some games, the hierarchy of suits is applied. So an ace card of any suit is always higher than a king card of any suit, but according to alphabetic order, the ace of diamonds is higher than the ace of clubs. Although high card by suit is never used to break ties in poker games, its application is accepted in certain condition.
When players have to be selected either to choose the dealer or to choose the game or to move to another game table, each player receives a card and the high card by suit rule is used to select one or several players. In some poker games like the 7-card stud where the player with the lowest face up card can start the betting by paying the minimum wager, or in a razz game where the player with the highest up card is required to pay the fractional wager, if a tie happens, then suit o the cards is used to select the player. Another situation where the high card by suit rule is followed is during pot splitting which needs to be done in equal amount. If the money in the pot cannot be equally shared, then to determine who gets the odd low value chip, the players cards are examined and he who has the higher card by suit gets it. However, in games played with blinds, the odd chip is given to the high hand and if there is tie of high or low hand, then the player next to the dealer button gets the odd chip. In poker tournaments, surplus low value chips is assigned by a modified deal where ties can be broken by high card by suit rule.
