A poker card dealer has manifold responsibilities while a hand of play is in progress which include inducing the participating players to act, declare a player’s intended betting action to others in the game table and supervising so that out of turn action is prevented.
In addition, the dealer in poker games must handle the pot, which means he is the authority to make sure that the amount of wagers put into it by the players during calling and raising is correct. Besides, the dealer is required to collect the cards of the players who have quitted the game by folding their hands and put the cards in the discarded card pile. If a poker game spills into side pot(s) situation, the dealer has to maintain the side pot(s) along with the main pot. When showdown takes place, it is the dealer’s job to calculate the value of the cards and find out who emerges as the pot’s winner and or in case of ties, winners. In those poker games where rake is a part, the dealer must also calculate the total pot size accurately and set aside the correct percentage that the casino house claims as its rake.
If a dealer wants to be in touch with fellow casino employees or with the management he may be given a headset or walkie-talkie or need to shout out his message. Some of the most important calls made by the poker card dealer are floor or decision (casino manager called to settle dispute), seat open (announcing vacancy at game table), player in (when vacancy is filled), fill (requesting dwindling chip tray be filled), set up (calling for alternative card decks), players checks (calling for players’ chips to be retrieved), pick up (in cash poker games, to remove absent player’s chips to vacate the seat and in satellite tournaments, calling for collection of cash entry fee from table) and winner (announcing a game in a satellite tournament has ended and it is time for payout).
