Anyone who is playing poker seriously need to be aware of how cheating may happen in this gambling game and how not luck or lack of skill, but manipulation can make one end up as a loser in a game. Cheating has been a part in any gambling game that gives a player or a group of players an extra edge and help them win. In poker, it is an advantage to know how cheating can happen so as to be able to counter it.
Cheating in poker games are not only seen in private home games where the supervision is lax, but also in casino houses. There are countless ways cheating can take place and collusion, sleight of hand or use of marked cards are the most resorted to by cheat players. There are many terms that have originated and are used in poker games to name cheats. So if someone is manipulator of cards by sleight of hand, he is a card mechanic while base dealer or bottom dealer is that person who uses two methods in order to maneuver how cards are dealt. The hand mucker is one who can switch cards and when one cheats by using mark cards, he is a paper player. Sometimes, a cheat will use mechanical holdouts and he would be called a machine player.
While most ways to cheat in a poker game needs skilled hands, there are some methods which require minimum of expertise and any player, rookie or veteran, can use them. Here, more than manipulation the nerve to pull out the cheating trick is required. When more than one player team up and decide to cheat it is collusion and this form of cheating is strictly supervised in poker tournaments and the rules against is most lightly observed in informal home games. There is another type of cheating called angle shooting which involve exploitation of certain rules of gameplay, which in themselves may not be illegal, but using them gives an unethical and unreasonable advantage.
